TCRA Member, Ryan Kolter shared his backyard hobby of metal casting at last night's Member Meeting on Thurs, Nov 7th. The public was invited to attend, and it was FREE to watch. Ryan is still new to the hobby but says he dedicates time to the craft nearly every weekend.
The molten metal is poured into a graphite mould to harden. The metal cast is safe to touch after being quenched in a bucket of water. The graphite moulds are fun, but Ryan plans to tinker in making his own moulds next with kinetic sand casting.
Bronze is melted in a crucible and poured into the mold through cups or funnels called sprues. The molten metal fills the space between the core and the sand. After the bronze has solidified in the mold, the molding sand can be knocked away and the core removed mechanically.
Ryan uses a battery powered drill with a steel brush attachment to buff and shape the metal.
